About Occupational Safety, Health and Welfare Training

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, strongly emphasises the need to provide employees with instruction, information and training necessary to ensure their health and safety. Providing employees with health and safety information and training reduces the chance of them suffering injuries or ill health. It helps them acquire the skills, knowledge and attitude to make them competent in the safety and health aspects of their work and instils a positive health and safety culture.

All employees should be provided with information on:

  • The hazards and risks within the workplace.
  • The hazards and risks affecting specific tasks or operations carried out by the person.
  • The control measures in place to minimse exposure to these risks.
  • Information and instructions on the job to be carried out and how to work safely.
  • Measures to be taken in an emergency.

Training means showing a person the correct method of doing a task and making sure that he or she can carry out the task correctly and safely. It can be formal, mandatory training such as Manual Handling, or informal on the job training such as showing a person the correct method of doing a job, pointing out dangers and ensuring that the person understands and can do the job safely.

About Food Safety Training

Illness arising from eating contaminated food is preventable through good food hygiene practices. These good food hygiene practices stem from food handlers (anyone who handles or prepares food, ice or drink) having adequate food knowledge and training.

The law requires that food handlers are supervised and trained in food hygiene relating to their work. During food hygiene inspections, food handlers will be observed and questioned to ensure that they have received adequate training.

Training should be reviewed periodically with refresher training offered to all food handling staff on a regular basis.

The purpose of Food Safety training is not only to gain the Certificate which someone will keep at the bottom of their deepest drawer, piled with many other long lost and forgotten items. The purpose of Food Safety training is to learn how to handle food in a safe and hygienic manner as in the end, all food handlers have a legal and moral duty to keep their customers safe from harm. The Certificate itself is just a nice add-on.
